Pre-workout Supplements: Good or Bad?

Recently I participated in a discussion at my local WCCO station about pre-workout supplements that contain stimulants like caffeine and 1-3 dimethylamylamine, or DMAA. Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to call these drugs “crack” (like the doctor who was also interviewed did). But I will say that it’s important to know what you’re putting in your body. The tough part about some supplements that are out there is that they contain both vasodilators (which widen blood vessels) and central nervous system or cardiac stimulants. When you combine those two together, it can cause a really heavy load on your heart and your blood pressure.
Before you resort to these sorts of chemicals to pump up your workout, give a healthy diet a try! Make sure you give your body the foods it needs: carbohydrates, protein, and lots of water and fluids.
